"For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so BY THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF ONE THE FREE GIFT CAME UPON ALL MEN UNTO JUSTIFICATION OF LIFE." (Romans 5:17-18) "WHO WILL HAVE ALL MEN TO BE SAVED, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; WHO GAVE HIMSELF A RANSOM FOR ALL, to be testified in due time." (1 Timothy 2:3-6) "And HE IS THE PROPITIATION for our sins: and not for ours only, but also FOR THE SINS OF THE WHOLE WORLD." (1 John 2:2)                                                                                                                                                                                               "WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST IS BORN OF GOD: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him." (1 John 5:1) "He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But AS MANY AS RECEIVED HIM, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to THEM THAT BELIEVE ON HIS NAME: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." (John 1:11-13)                                                                                                                                                                                               "Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that EVERY MOUTH MAY BE STOPPED, and ALL THE WORLD MAY BECOME GUILTY before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD which is by faith of Jesus Christ UNTO ALL and UPON ALL THEM THAT BELIEVE: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being JUSTIFIED FREELY BY HIS GRACE THROUGH THE REDEMPTION THAT IS IN CHRIST JESUS: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be A PROPITIATION THROUGH FAITH IN HIS BLOOD, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and THE JUSTIFIER OF HIM WHICH BELIEVETH IN JESUS. 27 Where is BOASTING then? It is EXCLUDED. By what law? of works? Nay: but BY THE LAW OF FAITH." (Romans 3:19-27)                                                                                                                                "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." (John 3:36)

INTRODUCTION

The following is a critique of TULIP Calvinist, Will Kinney's article entitled, Why do some believe the Gospel and others do not? by myself, John Henry.  This critique resulted from my having posted the article, The Calvinist TULIP Refuted By Scripture to my Facebook group, Earnestly Contend for The Faith.  In turn Brother Kinney posted the link to his article on my Facebook group.  What follows is my answer to it.

In this Facebook group discussion my good friend of many years, Pastor Dallas Bunch said:

"Concerning election in eternity past. God's plan is eternal and He did determine that those who believed in Christ would be eternally saved. He did determine that those who did not believe in Christ would be eternally damned. That does not eliminate human responsibility. Unless and until you believe you are condemned and lost. When you do believe you are justified and secure. What you do with God's dealing with you about your salvation ultimately is your responsibility, so choose life, choose Christ, choose heaven, choose faith, choose grace or you will certainly choose damnation. Study carefully Romans 10:8-17, Follow the instructions given you. Then my friend, God will certainly save your soul. Do it now! Do it today! Also don't believe the Bible somewhere, somehow makes these promises void. They do not! "

WILL KINNEY:  JOHN 10:16, 26

Faith or belief is a gift from God. Faith is not something we can produce on our own. God has to give it to us. Those who are not His sheep do not believe because they are not His sheep.

John 10:26. "Jesus said to the Pharisees "But ye believe not, BECAUSE ye are not my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

Please notice it does not say "you are not My sheep because you do not believe", as if by believing they would become His sheep, but rather the reason they do not believe is because they are not His sheep. Jesus calls His people His sheep even before they hear His voice.

John 10:16. "And other sheep I HAVE, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear My voice; and there shall be one fold and one shepherd."

JOHN HENRY:

Kinney uses weasel wording when he says: "Faith or belief is a gift from God. Faith is not something we can produce on our own. God has to give it to us." And then jumps to the fallacious statement: "Those who are not His sheep do not believe because they are not His sheep." Kinney's proof text is John 10:26 which says, "Jesus said to the Pharisees "But ye believe not, BECAUSE ye are not my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." However, the Lord had already stated:

John 10:4, 9, 14: "And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for THEY KNOW HIS VOICE. ... 9 I am the door: by me IF ANY MAN ENTER IN, HE SHALL BE SAVED, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. ... 14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and AM KNOWN OF MINE." (cf. Ezekiel 34:6-12)

The answer is plain and simple: The saved are attentive to His "voice," God's word and "enter in," by "the door" and the Lord Jesus Christ is "known" of them who hear Him. God knew who would believe and who would not from before the foundation of the world, and selected them on the basis of His foreknowledge.

1 Peter 1:3, 17-23: "ELECT ACCORDING TO THE FOREKNOWLEDGE of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ ... 17 And if ye call on the Father, who WITHOUT RESPECT OF PERSONS judgeth according to every man's work [cf. Jn. 6:29], pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: 18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was FOREORDAINED BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. 22 Seeing YE HAVE PURIFIED YOUR SOULS IN OBEYING THE TRUTH THROUGH THE SPIRIT unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23 Being BORN AGAIN, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, BY THE WORD OF GOD, which liveth and abideth for ever." (cf. Romans 8:29-30; Ephesians 1:4-14; 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14)

Hebrews 4:1-6: "Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but THE WORD PREACHED DID NOT PROFIT THEM, NOT BEING MIXED WITH FAITH in them that heard it. 3 For WE WHICH HAVE BELIEVED DO ENTER INTO REST, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although THE WORKS WERE FINISHED FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD. 4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. 5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest. 6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and THEY TO WHOM IT WAS FIRST PREACHED ENTERED NOT IN BECAUSE OF UNBELIEF." (cf. Revelation 13:8-9, 17:8 "... they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose NAMES WERE NOT WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF LIFE FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD, when they behold the beast ..."

Revelation 3:5: "HE THAT OVERCOMETH, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I [Jesus] WILL NOT BLOT OUT HIS NAME OUT OF THE BOOK OF LIFE, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels." (cf. Psalm 69:24-28)

1 John 5:4-5: "For whatsoever is born of God OVERCOMETH the world: and this is the VICTORY that OVERCOMETH the world, even OUR FAITH. WHO IS HE THAT OVERCOMETH the world, but HE THAT BELIEVETH THAT JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD?" (cf. 1 Jn. 2:13-14, 4:4)

Revelation 21:7-8: "He that OVERCOMETH shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and UNBELIEVING, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." (Lk. 12:4-5)

WILL KINNEY: EPHESIANS 1:4-5

I have heard some of my "I chose of my own free will to believe in Christ" brethren try to get around the clear teaching of Scripture that we were chosen IN CHRIST before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will" (Ephesians 1:4-5) by telling us that we "get in Christ by believing the gospel".

Well, even though there is not a single verse in Scripture that teaches this ...

JOHN HENRY:

Kinney gives us more weasel wording mixed with pontification.

1 Corinthians 4:15: "For ... in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel."

Ephesians 3:6: "That the Gentiles should be ... partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:"

2 Thessalonians 1:8: "In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:"

WILL KINNEY:

Well, even though there is not a single verse in Scripture that teaches this, even if it were so, the questions come down to two: 1. How did we get "in Christ" and 2. Why do we believe and others do not? The way we get "in Christ" is pretty simple.  It is GOD who puts us in Christ.

JOHN HENRY:

Another word on God's election to salvation. God is omniscient! Satan's rebellion did not take Him by surprise, neither Adam's Fall, nor when one receives the Lord Jesus as Saviour and Lord. There is no doctrine clearer than God's method of election. It was settled before the foundation of the world based on His foreknowledge of who would repent and believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Setteled in eternity pass; effectual in time as individuals respond to God's love, mercy and grace. It is absurd to charge one with PRIDE for receiving this gift of God. If there was pride involved then there was no salvation. If there was fear of God's judgment, Hell, and godly sorrow for offending the holy God of all that is (repentance) and receiving His saving mercy and grace by faith there was salvation.

1 Peter 1:3, 22: "Elect according to the FOREKNOWLEDGE of God the Father, ... Seeing ye have purified your souls in OBEYING THE TRUTH through the spirit ..." (cf. Romans 8:29-30; Ephesians 1:4-14; 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14)

Ephesians 1:4, 13: "According as he hath CHOSEN US IN HIM BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: ... In whom ye also trusted, AFTER that YE HEARD THE WORD OF TRUTH, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit ..."

2 Thessalonians 2:13-14: "... God hath FROM THE BEGINNING chosen you to salvation THROUGH SANCTIFICATION OF THE SPIRIT AND BELIEF OF THE TRUTH: Whereunto he CALLED YOU BY OUR GOSPEL, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Hebrews 4:2-3, 6: "For unto us was THE GOSPEL PREACHED, as well as unto them: but the word preached DID NOT PROFIT THEM, NOT BEING MIXED WITH FAITH in them that heard it. 3 For we which have BELIEVED do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were FINISHED FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD. ... 6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and THEY to whom it was first preached ENTERED NOT IN BECAUSE OF UNBELIEF."

WILL KINNEY:

Scripture tells us that God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world, and in 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 we read: "For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: BUT GOD HATH CHOSEN the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and GOD HATH CHOSEN the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, HATH GOD CHOSEN, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are; That no flesh should glory in His presence.  BUT OF HIM ARE YE IN CHRIST JESUS, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption; That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord."

JOHN HENRY:

No believer disputes the fact that God has chosen the method of salvation nor the fact that it is "of Him" that we are "in Christ Jesus" (1 Cor. 1:30). The question is: Did God elect arbitrarily or did He do is as He prescribed in His word? (see 1 Peter 1:3, 22; Ephesians 1:4, 13; 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14; Hebrews 4:2-3, 6 above).

1 Corinthians 1:18, 21: "For THE PREACHING OF THE CROSS is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is THE POWER OF GOD. ... For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the FOOLISHNESS OF PREACHING TO SAVE THEM THAT BELIEVE."

Matthew 18:3-4: "And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and BECOME AS LITTLE CHILDREN, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall HUMBLE himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven." (cf. Proverbs 1:23-33)

Born again people do not believe for one second that they were saved by any word, nor did they receive Christ in pride as Will Kinney would have us believe.  One receives Jesus Christ in the fear of the Lord and contriteness which requires repentance (a turning in the heart from sin).

Psalms 34:18:  "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."

Isaiah 66:2:  "... to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word."

Proverbs 22:4:  "By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life."

James 4:6, 10:  "But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. ... Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up."

Luke 18:13:  "And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner."

2 Corinthians 7:10:  "For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death."

Proverbs 3:34:  "Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly."

Proverbs 15:33:  "The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility."

Proverbs 29:23:  "A manís pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit."

Psalms 34:18:  "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."

Psalms 149:4:  "For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation."

Isaiah 57:15:  "For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones."

WILL KINNEY:

It is God Himself who puts us "in Christ" both in time and before the foundation of the world, and it is God Himself who gives us the faith to believe in His Son as our Redeemer. ALL the glory goes to Him and none to ourselves for this wonderful salvation we have.

JOHN HENRY:

Of course it is God who puts us "in Christ" both in time and before the foundation of the world! However, it is not as you teach that He makes us believe. Rather, He has given us the ability to receive or reject the Truth, to believe or not believe in Christ when reproved by the Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 29:1: "He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy."

John 5:39-40: "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life."

Hebrews 10:38-39: "Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that BELIEVE TO THE SAVING OF THE SOUL."

Job 33:27-30: "He looketh upon men, and IF ANY SAY, I HAVE SINNED, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; 28 HE WILL DELIVER HIS SOUL from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light. 29 Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man, 30 To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living." (cf. John 1:4, 3:20-21, 8:12)

WILL KINNEY: JOHN 12:37-40

Another reason given in Scripture why some cannot believe is because God blinds their eyes and hardens their hearts. John 12:37-40 "But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him; That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? Therefore THEY COULD NOT BELIEVE, BECAUSE that Esaias said again, HE (God) HATH BLINDED THEIR EYES, AND HARDENED THEIR HEART; THAT THEY SHOULD NOT SEE with their eyes, NOR UNDERSTAND with their heart, AND BE CONVERTED, and I should heal them."

JOHN HENRY:

The answer is right there in the first verse of Kinney's referenced passage:

John 12:37: "But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet THEY BELIEVED NOT ON HIM:"

The majority of the Jews of Christ's day, as the majority of all peoples of all times "believe not on Him," not because God made them so, but because they will not enter in at the narrow way (Matthew 7:13-14; John 10:9, 14:6).

John 14:6: "Jesus saith ..., I AM THE WAY, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

To help understand John 12:37-40 let's look at Isaiah 6:9-10 to which the Lord Jesus is referring here:

Isaiah 6:9-13: "And he said, Go, and TELL THIS PEOPLE, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. 10 Make the heart of THIS PEOPLE fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. 11 Then said I, Lord, HOW LONG? And he answered, UNTIL THE CITIES BE WASTED WITHOUT INHABITANT, AND THE HOUSES WITHOUT MAN, AND THE LAND BE UTTERLY DESOLATE, 12 AND THE LORD HAVE REMOVED MEN FAR AWAY, AND THERE BE A GREAT FORSAKING IN THE MIDST OF THE LAND. 13 But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof."

1. THIS PEOPLE = National Israel, not individual Jews! This prophecy of national chastisement has been fulfilled repeatedly (Assyrian, Babylonian, Roman captivities)
2. It does not include those who like Isaiah repent and trust in God's mercy and grace (Isa. 6:1-7; Ps. 1:1-3).
3. It does include the majority of Israel, the microcosm of all nations (Matt. 7:13-14), to whom much has been given (Luke 12:48), but who "always resist the Holy Ghost" (Acts 7:51). This obstinate resistance is seen in the previous chapter of Isaiah (Isa. 5:18-21; cf. 48:1, 4-5, 18, 22; Ps. 1:4-6; Matt. 22:14).
4. The note in the Calvinist Geneva Bible on Isaiah 6:9 states: "By which is declared that for THE MALICE OF MAN God will not immediately take away his word, but he will cause it to be preached to their condemnation, when as they will not learn by it to obey his will, and be saved: by this he exhorts the ministers to do their duty, and answers to the wicked murmurers, that THROUGH THEIR OWN MALICE THEIR HEART IS HARDENED. -- Mat 13:14; Act 28:26; Rom 11:8." (Emphasis mine) And concerning verse 10 another Calvinist, John Gill says, "The prophet speaks of the event, the fact as it would actually happen, NOT OF GOD'S PURPOSE and act by his ministry. ... Or the words may be understood thus, according to the Hebrew idiom: 'Ye certainly hear, but do not understand; ye certainly see, but do not acknowledge.' Seeing this is the case, make the heart of this people fat - declare it to be stupid and senseless; and remove from them the means of salvation, which they have so long abused." (Emphasis mine) Not even strong Calvinists accuse God falsely as Kinney does!

Now look at Kinney's referenced passage again:

John 12:37-41: "But though he had done so many miracles before THEM, yet THEY believed not on him: 38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, WHO hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? 39 Therefore THEY could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 40 He hath blinded THEIR eyes, and hardened THEIR heart; that THEY should not see with THEIR eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal THEM. 41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him."

1. Note again: THEM, THEIR, THEY = National Israel.
2. Verse 41 specifically points us back to Isaiah 6 where we find Isaiah seeing his own sinfulness and repenting after seeing the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up (Isa. 6:1-8). There Isaiah said: "... Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts." (Isaiah 6:5) When one comes to the realization of God's total holiness, repentance follows. Likewise, when we see His love faith will follow. When these two occur God instantly regenerates our dead spirits.
3. Here as in every reference to Isaiah 6:9-10 it speaks of National Israel, not individuals.

By looking at the other passages that refer back to Isaiah 6:9-10 (Matthew 13:10-15, Mark 4:10-20, Acts 28:23-28, and Romans 11:7-8, 11-12, 25) we find:

1. As in Isaiah 6 the Lord's pronouncement of spiritual blindness and deafness in Matthew 13:15 follows obstinate resistance to Truth. In the previous chapter blasphemy of the Holy Ghost had been committed by the Pharisees (Matt. 12:31-32; cf. 1 Jn. 5:6-10; Matt. 12:22-35).
2. The THEY, THEIR, THEM in Matthew 13:13-15 and Mark 4:12 is from Isaiah 6:9-10 and is again speaking of National Israel.
3. The phrase, "them that are WITHOUT" in Mark 4:11 speaks of unrepentant and thus unregenerate liars, etc. in Hell (Rev 21:7-8). Revelation 22:14-15 says, "Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For WITHOUT are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie." (cf. 1 Cor. 5:11-13; Col. 4:5-6; Matt. 22:36-40)
4. In Mark 4:15 it says, "... Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts." "But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom THE GOD OF THIS WORLD HATH BLINDED THE MINDS OF THEM WHICH BELIEVE NOT, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them." (2 Corinthins 4:3-4)
5. In Acts 28:23-28 Paul expounds the Old Testament Scriptures concerning Jesus Christ to Jews in Rome (Acts 26:17-22) and ends his message with Isaiah 6:9-10. Some of these Jews believed and some did not (v. 24).
6. We find the term "this people" two more times in Acts 28:26-27 again representing judgment upon National Israel. It is not God preventing any individual Jew's ability to believe and be saved. Whosoever is invited to come to Jesus Christ for salvation through repentance and faith (cf. Rev. 22:17).
7. Note that as in Matthew 13 and Acts 28 "the heart of THIS PEOPLE is waxed gross" (Acts 28:27; cf. Matt. 13:15). The hearts of the unbelievers that Jesus is referring to had already "waxed gross" (become callous and dull) and they had already "closed" their own "eyes" before the Lord pronounced their condemnation (Matt. 13:15; Acts 28:27).
8. Paul said that his "heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved" (Rom. 10:1, cf. 9:1-3), and so the election will be! God works the most optimal conditions for the salvation of "whosoever will" of both Jews and Gentiles (Deut. 32:21; Rom. 10:19-21, 11:11-15; Acts 28:28).

WILL KINNEY: 1 PETER 2:7-9; JUDE 4

Does God appoint certain men to unbelief? Yes, Scripture says that He does. In 1 Peter 2:7-9 we read:

"Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to THEM WHICH STUMBLE AT THE WORD, BEING DISOBEDIENT: WHEREUNTO ALSO THEY WERE APPOINTED. BUT YE ARE A CHOSEN GENERATION, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light."

Jude 4 tells us: "For there are certain men crept in unawares, WHO WERE BEFORE OF OLD ORDAINED TO THIS CONDEMNATION, ungodly men, turning the grace of God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ."

JOHN HENRY:

Kinney's question: "Does God appoint certain men to unbelief?" Absolutely not! Moreover, in Peter 2:7-8 it does not say that God appointed the lost to be "disobedient" and "stumble at the word" (cf. 1 Peter 1:22).

Lamentations 3:32-36: "But THOUGH HE CAUSE GRIEF, YET WILL HE HAVE COMPASSION according to the multitude of his mercies. 33 For HE DOTH NOT AFFLICT WILLINGLY nor grieve the children of men. 34 To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth, 35 TO TURN ASIDE THE RIGHT OF A MAN before the face of the most High, 36 TO SUBVERT A MAN IN HIS CAUSE, THE LORD APPROVETH NOT."

2 Samuel 14:14: "For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him."

Ezekiel 18:23, 32: "Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live? ... For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye." (cf. Ezek. 33:11; 2 Pet. 3:9)

1 Timothy 2:4: "Who will have ALL men to be saved, and to COME UNTO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH."

To understand 1 Peter 2:7-8 it is good to look at the Old Testament passages that come into play and other New Testament passages where they are quoted:

Psalms 118:21-23: "I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation. 22 The stone which the builders refused is become the HEAD STONE OF THE CORNER. 23 This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes."

Isaiah 8:13-15 "Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and LET HIM BE YOUR FEAR, and let him be your dread. 14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for A STONE OF STUMBLING and for A ROCK OF OFFENCE to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken."

Isaiah 28:15-16: "Because ye have said, We have made A COVENANT WITH DEATH, AND WITH HELL are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: 16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, A PRECIOUS CORNER STONE, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste."

Romans 9:30-33: "What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. 31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. 32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For THEY STUMBLED AT THAT STUMBLINGSTONE; 33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall NOT BE ASHAMED."

1 Corinthians 1:23-24: "But we preach Christ crucified, UNTO THE JEWS A STUMBLINGBLOCK, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God."

Acts 4:11-12: "This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become THE HEAD OF THE CORNER. 12 NEITHER IS THERE SALVATION IN ANY OTHER: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

1 Peter 2:7-9: "Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but UNTO THEM WHICH BE DISOBEDIENT, THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS DISALLOWED, the same is made the head of the corner, 8 And a stone of stumbling, and A ROCK OF OFFENCE, even TO THEM WHICH STUMBLE AT THE WORD, BEING DISOBEDIENT: WHEREUNTO ALSO THEY WERE APPOINTED. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light."

We therefore should be able to see that 1 Peter 2:7-8 alludes back to Isaiah 6:9-13 (See Part Three of this series) and 1 Peter 2:9 speaks of a new "nation" and "priesthood" consisting of both Jews and Gentiles (cf. Eph. 2:11-22; Rom. 10:12; Gal. 3:28; Col. 3:11). "Them [National Israel] which were disobedient ... were appointed" to "stumble at the word," and "an holy nation" consisting only of those who have been born again was established by God.

The above being the primary meaning does not negate the fact that all the lost are appointed to "stumble at the word" because they are "disobedient" meaning unbelieving. As in the previous chapter believers as said to "have purified your souls in OBEYING THE TRUTH through the Spirit" (1 Peter 1:22) They were appointed to stumble, not by an arbitrary act of God. This false god of the TULIP Calvinist is not found in Scripture.

Likewise in Jude 4 the Lord "ordained" Christ deniers to "condemnation" because the rejection of the Lord Jesus is the only unforgivable sin. This is the prime reason we "should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints." (Jude 3)

Jude 3-4: "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, WHO WERE BEFORE OF OLD ORDAINED TO THIS CONDEMNATION, ungodly men, turning the grace of God into lasciviousness, and DENYING THE ONLY LORD GOD, AND OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST."

These Christ deniers are they "... whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world ..." (Revelation 17:8, cf. 13:8; Psalm 69:24-28; Exodus 32:33). There is only one sin that cannot be forgiven:

1 John 5:10-12: "He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life."

WILL KINNEY: ROMANS 9:18-24

Romans chapter Nine makes these truths abundantly clear for those who have ears to hear and eyes to see. Here we read:

"Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, AND WHOM HE WILL HE HARDENETH. Thous wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, OF THE SAME LUMP to make one vessel unto honour, AND ANOTHER UNTO DISHONOUR? What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering THE VESSELS OF WRATH FITTED TO DESTRUCTION: And that he make know the riches of his glory on THE VESSELS OF MERCY, WHICH HE HAD AFORE PREPARED UNTO GLORY, Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?" Romans 9:18-24

JOHN HENRY:

Kinney would have us believe that Romans 9 makes "these truths" (i.e. that God arbitrarily, with no equitable standard, damns people to hell) "abundantly clear."  Nothing could be farther from the truth!   Neither in Romans 9:18-24, nor anywhere else in the Bible, is this false teaching found.  God, Himself, tells us in His holy word that He has a standard to choose people to salvation.  He judges man's heart!  The question is:  Will one repent, believe and receive God as Lord and Saviour or not.  God wants people to know Him and be saved.  The phrase [ye shall, thou shalt, etc.] "know that I am the LORD your God" is found in 8 verses in connection with the exodus and in a total of 77 Old Testament verses.  The Lord wants people to know that He is God and to come to Him for salvation.

The Almighty did not cause Pharaoh to reject Truth.  Pharaoh did that all on his own, as is the case with Esau and all the lost.  However, the Lord rather raised him up and "hardened his heart" to declared His name throughout all the earth that people might fear and be saved!

Exodus 9:16:  "And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee [Pharaoh] up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth." (cf. Romans 9:17)

Psalm 75:4-7, 10:  "I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:  5 Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with A STIFF NECK.  6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.  7 But GOD IS THE JUDGE: he putteth down one, and setteth up another. ... 10 All the horns of THE WICKED also will I cut off; but the horns of THE RIGHTEOUS shall be exalted." (cf. Dan. 4:28-37)

Psalm 98:2-3, 9: "The LORD hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.  3 He hath remembered HIS MERCY and HIS TRUTH toward the house of Israel: ALL THE ENDS OF THE EARTH HAVE SEEN THE SALVATION OF OUR GOD .... 9 for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity."

Isaiah 45:21-22:  "Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; A JUST GOD AND A SAVIOUR; there is none beside me.  LOOK UNTO ME, AND BE YE SAVED, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else."

Genesis 18:25:  "... Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" (cf. Ps. 9:7-8, 96:13, 98:9)

Concerning the vessels of wrath and the vessels of mercy:

Romans 9:22-24:  "What if God, willing to shew HIS WRATH, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering THE VESSELS OF WRATH fitted to destruction:  23 And that he make know the riches of his glory on THE VESSELS OF MERCY, which he had afore prepared unto glory,  24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?"

Romans 1:18-20, 2:4-9:  "For THE WRATH OF GOD is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who HOLD THE TRUTH IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS;  19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for GOD HATH SHEWED IT UNTO THEM.  20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that THEY ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE: ... 4 Or despisest thou the riches of HIS GOODNESS AND FORBEARANCE AND LONGSUFFERING; not knowing that THE GOODNESS OF GOD LEADETH THEE TO REPENTANCE?  5  But AFTER THY HARDNESS AND IMPENITENT HEART TREASUREST UP UNTO THYSELF WRATH  against THE DAY OF WRATH and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6  Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 7  To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: 8  But unto them that are contentious, and DO NOT OBEY THE TRUTH, but obey unrighteousness, INDIGNATION AND WRATH, 9  Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil ..."

2 Peter 3:9:  "THE LORD is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but IS LONGSUFFERING to us-ward, NOT WILLING THAT ANY SHOULD PERISH, but that ALL should come to REPENTANCE."

Nahum 1:2:  "God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and HE RESERVETH WRATH FOR HIS ENEMIES."

Romans 5:1-2, 8-10:  "Therefore being JUSTIFIED BY FAITH, we have PEACE with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:  2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. ... 8 But God commendeth HIS LOVE toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be SAVED FROM WRATH THROUGH HIM.  10 For if, when WE WERE ENEMIES, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life."

Colossians 1:21-22:  "And you, that were sometime alienated and ENEMIES IN YOUR MIND by wicked works, yet NOW HATH HE RECONCILED IN THE BODY OF HIS FLESH THROUGH DEATH ..."

1 John 4:19:  "We love him, because he first loved us."

Romans 8:28-30:  "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.  29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.  30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified."

Adam and Eve's sin that brought both spiritual and physical death upon all their posterity was so easy for them to commit!  However, the remedy is even easier!!!  Even a child can do it!

John 3:16: "For God so LOVED the world, that he GAVE his only begotten SON, that whosoever BELIEVETH in him should NOT PERISH, but have EVERLASTING LIFE."

WILL KINNEY: ROMANS 12:3; 2 THESSALONIANS 3:2

The reason you and I believe the gospel is because God Himself gives us faith. Romans 12:3 "For I say, through the grace given unto me, TO EVERY MAN THAT IS AMONG YOU, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, according as GOD HATH DEALT TO EVERY MAN THE MEASURE OF FAITH."

The "every man" in the context is the "every man among you" or those who are already Christians. Not everyone has faith. 2 Thessalonians 3:2 "for all men have not faith" and obviously there are unbelievers.

JOHN HENRY

Here Kinney is correct about this gift being for believers only, but his premise is erroneous.  There are three kinds of faith spoken of in Scripture.

1. Our own faith is exercised when we hear or read the Gospel from the Scriptures under the conviction of the Holy Spirit:

Luke 7:50:  "And he said to the woman, THY FAITH HATH SAVED THEE; go in peace."

John 3:5:  "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of WATER and of THE SPIRIT, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." (cf. Titus 3:5; Ephesians 5:26; Isaiah 55:10-11; Ezekiel 36:25-26; Hebrews 10:22)

The word of God applied by the Holy Spirit produces saving faith if received:

Revelation 22:17:  "And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him TAKE THE WATER OF LIFE FREELY." (cf. John 4:10-15)

Acts 17:11:  "These [Bereans] were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that THEY RECEIVED THE WORD WITH ALL READINESS OF MIND, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." (cf. Acts 2:41, 8:14, 11:1; Matthew 13:23)

1 Thessalonians 2:13:  "For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when YE RECEIVED THE WORD OF GOD which ye heard of us, YE RECEIVED IT not as the word of men, but AS IT IS IN TRUTH, THE WORD OF GOD, which effectually worketh also in you that believe."

James 1:21:  "Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and RECEIVE WITH MEEKNESS THE ENGRAFTED WORD, which is able to save your souls."

John 12:48:  "He that REJECTETH ME, and RECEIVETH NOT MY WORDS, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day." (cf. John 5:39-40)

2.  There is also one of the fruits of the Spirit called "faith" which is given to all believers to help us in our walk.

Galatians 5:22-23:  "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, FAITH,  23  Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.  24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.  25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." (cf. Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16; 2 Corinthians 5:7)

3.  The third kind of "faith" is one of the spiritual gifts.  This is the faith that Kinney refers to in Romans 12:3.  It is one of 3 spiritual gifts that is given to every believer.

God gives all born again believers at least 3 spiritual gifts to use in His service so "that the church may receive edifying" (1 Corinthians 14:5,12), and for the believer to "profit withal" at the Judgment Seat of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:7, cf. 3:11-15; 2 Corinthians 5:10).  There are 2 chapters that list the spiritual gifts:  1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12.  All of the revelation and sign gifts (Mark 16:17-18, 20) which are spoken of in 1 Corinthians 12 are no longer in effect since "that which is perfect," the completed New Testament, has come (1 Corinthians 13:8-12; James 1:23-25)  However, there are at least 10 service gifts remaining.

The 3 spiritual gifts that every believer have are: GIVING over and above the tithe (Romans 12:8; 2 Corinthians 9:7), SHOWING MERCY especially for soul winning (Romans 12:8; Matthew 4:19; Colossians 4:5-6; 1 Peter 3:15; Jude 22-23), and FAITH for prayer (Romans 12:3; 1 Corinthians 12:9, cf. 13:2; Mark 11:22-26)

WILL KINNEY:

Philippians 1:29 "For UNTO YOU IT IS GIVEN in the behalf of Christ, not only TO BELIEVE ON HIM, but also to suffer for his sake."

Ephesians 2:8 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and THAT NOT OF YOURSELVES, IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD."

As a side note, some argue that the gift is not faith, and I actually agree with them on this. The word "that" in "and that not of yourselves" is the neuter singular Touto. It cannot refer specifically to faith, which is feminine, nor to grace, which also is feminine, and certainly not to "ye are saved" because this is a verb and not a noun. Rather the word "that" refers back to the whole idea encompassed by the phrase "by grace ye are saved through faith" and THAT not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.

JOHN HENRY:

If "that" (Greek: touto) in Ephesians 2:8 had meant both "saved" and "faith" it would have been "tauta" (plural) rather than "touto" (singular).  See "that" (tauta) as it is used with "wrong" and "defraud" in 1 Corinthians 6:8.  In Ephesians 2:8 "grace" is the way God provides salvation, and man receives it through "faith."  Faith is in no way a meritorious act.  More importantly it is the normal since of understanding the verse in English:  1) by grace 2) are ye saved 3) through faith.

WILL KINNEY:

Ephesians 1:19 "And what is the exceeding greatness of his power TO US-WARD THAT BELIEVE, ACCORDING TO HIS MIGHTY POWER."

Tyndale notes in the margin of his translation of this verse: "Faith is the work of God only, even as the raising up of Christ."

Scripture speaks of "THE FAITH OF GOD'S ELECT" Titus 1:1

We are told that Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith - Hebrews 12:2 "Looking unto JESUS THE AUTHOR AND FINISHER OF OUR FAITH."

JOHN HENRY:

Well of course it is "...  according to THE FAITH of God's elect, and the acknowledging of THE TRUTH ..." and likewise "... according to his mighty power ..." that we are saved?!  And most assuredly the Lord Jesus is "... the author and finisher of our faith."  However, these verses do not prove that God forces people to believe unwillingly.

WILL KINNEY:

Acts 3:16 "yea, THE FAITH WHICH IS BY HIM (not just 'in' him, but by Him") hath given him this perfect soundness "

JOHN HENRY:

Acts 3:16 was faith for healing, likely "the gift of faith," prayer, exorcized by Peter.

WILL KINNEY:

Acts 18:27 "he helped them much WHICH HAD BELIEVED THROUGH GRACE." It wasn't just that they believed "in" grace, by it was 'through grace' that they believed.

JOHN HENRY:

Acts 18:27-28:  "And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace:  28  For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ."

With a little little context it is easy to see how Paul helped them!

WILL KINNEY:

Acts 14:27 "they rehearsed all that God had done among them, and how HE HAD OPENED THE DOOR OF FAITH unto the Gentiles." If God doesn't open the door, there is no faith.

JOHN HENRY:

If anyone will believe the saving power of Lord Jesus then He will get the Truth to them (1 Peter 4:6; 2 Peter 2:9; 1 Timothy 2:4-6)

- - - - - - - - - - - -

WILL KINNEY: ACTS 13:48, 15:9, 16:14

Acts 16:14 "Lydia ... WHOSE HEART THE LORD OPENED, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of by Paul"

JOHN HENRY:

If "Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith" then who else would open our heart? Likewise, my heart the Lord opened, that I attended unto the things which were spoken of by the soul winner who came to the door that Spring morning 36 years ago. The Lord foresaw that I would repent of my sins and put my faith in Jesus Christ to save me from Hell!

WILL KINNEY:

Acts 15:9 "and put no difference between us (believing Jews) and them (believing Gentiles) PURIFYING THEIR HEARTS BY FAITH." God purified their hearts by faith, not 'because of' faith. God did it and He did it by faith which He himself gave them. It was not "their free will choosing to believe".

JOHN HENRY:

Acts 15:7-9: "... God made choice among us, that the Gentiles BY MY MOUTH SHOULD HEAR THE WORD OF THE GOSPEL, AND BELIEVE. 8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; 9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts BY FAITH."

Practically all of the 36 verses that contain the phrase "by faith" in the New Testament are in the pass tense. The dead spirits of the Gentiles in Acts 15 had already been regenerated, but their hearts (souls) continued to undergo purifying.

Romans 3:30: "Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision BY FAITH, and uncircumcision THROUGH FAITH."

Romans 3:22: '"Even the righteousness of God which is BY FAITH of Jesus Christ unto all and UPON ALL THEM THAT BELIEVE: for there is no difference:"

Galatians 3:22: "But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise BY FAITH of Jesus Christ might be GIVEN TO THEM THAT BELIEVE."

The Faith Chapter, Hebrews 11, tells us:

Hebrews 11:6: "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."

WILL KINNEY:

Acts 13:48 "and AS MANY AS WERE ORDAINED TO ETERNAL LIFE BELIEVED." Their having been ordained to eternal life preceded their believing. The reason they believed is because God had ordained them to faith in the gospel.

JOHN HENRY

Of course they believed because God is omniscient and knew they would believe from before creation. He knows who will respond and receive the Gospel and who will not. A wise preacher has said something like this: "Above the door to Heaven on the outside is written, 'Whosoever will, let him come,' but on the inside over the door it says, 'Chosen before the foundation of the world'."

After coming to Antioch in Pisidia (Acts 13:14-15) Paul preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Jews twice in the synagogue (Acts 13:16-44). It is recorded that the following occurred on the second Sabbath in Acts 13:45-48:

"But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that THE WORD OF GOD should first have been spoken to you: but seeing YE PUT IT FROM YOU, and JUDGE YOURSELVES unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. 48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified THE WORD OF THE LORD: and as many as were ORDAINED to eternal life believed."

Paul said to those lost Jews of Antioch in Pisidia "ye put [the word of God] from you, and JUDGE YOURSELVES unworthy of everlasting life ... " (Acts 13:46). "He came unto his own, and his own received him not" (John 1:11). God bids them to come to Him, but they "make excuse" and do not come. His own also "resist the Holy Ghost" (Acts 7:51).

Hebrews 4:2-3, 6: "... THE WORD PREACHED DID NOT PROFIT THEM, NOT BEING MIXED WITH FAITH in them that heard it. For WE which have believed do ENTER into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. ... THEY to whom it was first preached ENTERED NOT IN BECAUSE OF UNBELIEF."

Luke 14:16-24: "... A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: 17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to THEM THAT WERE BIDDEN, Come; for all things are now ready. 18 And THEY ALL with one consent began to MAKE EXCUSE. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. 19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. 20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I CANNOT COME. 21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. 22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. 23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I say unto you, That NONE of those men which were BIDDEN SHALL TASTE of my supper."

Deuteronomy 32:21: "They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation."

Romans 11:11-12: "I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?

We therefore see that it is those who put the Gospel from themselves who are judged "unworthy of everlasting life" (Acts 13:46) and are "fitted to destruction" (Romans 9:22), but it is those who "believed" who "were ORDAINED to eternal life" (Acts 13:48).

How are "the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction" (Rom. 9:22), and how were the saved "afore prepared unto glory" (Rom. 9:23)? Again:

Ephesians 1:4, 13: "According as he hath CHOSEN US IN HIM before the foundation of the world ... In whom ye also trusted, AFTER that ye heard THE WORD OF TRUTH ..." (cf. 1 Peter 1:3, 22; 2 Thess. 2:13)

Romans 10:19-21: "But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you. 20 But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me. 21 But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people." (Deuteronomy 32:21; Romans 11:11-12)

The last verse of my text above concerning Paul's preaching the Gospel to Jews, proselytes and Gentiles in Antioch in Pisidia in Acts 13 says:

Acts 13:48: "And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified THE WORD OF THE LORD: and as many as were ORDAINED to eternal life believed."

"Ordained" and "appointed" are synonymous (1 Peter 2:8). The choice, election, appointment, and ordination is based in God's foreknowledge.

WILL KINNEY: 1 PETER 1:21; 2 PETER 1:1; 1 CORINTHIANS 3:5-6, 12:9; GALATIANS 5:22; 2 CORINTHIANS 10:15

1 Peter 1:21 "WHO BY HIM BELIEVE IN GOD that raised him up from the dead" Again, it is BY HIM that we believe in God.

2 Peter 1:1 "TO THEM THAT HAVE OBTAINED LIKE PRECIOUS FAITH WITH US through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ".

They obtained this faith, they did not have it to begin with and then did their part to exercise it.

JOHN HENRY:

They did not have faith in time, but God foresaw it in eternity past. However, this fact in nowise means that God predestined unbelief, but rather that He knew those who would never under any circumstances believe and be saved. If any will repent of their sin against Him and believe with their heart that he is willing and able to save them, then He will most assuredly save them!

2 Peter 1:1-4: "Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have OBTAINED like PRECIOUS FAITH with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you THROUGH THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD, AND OF JESUS OUR LORD, 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, THROUGH THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIM that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 WHEREBY ARE GIVEN UNTO US EXCEEDING GREAT AND PRECIOUS PROMISES: that BY THESE YE MIGHT BE PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."

Here Peter is writing to saved people who "... have obtained like precious faith ... through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ" (1 Pet. 1:1). How was this "like precious faith" secured? "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things ... through the knowledge of him [God's word] that hath called us ..." (1 Pet. 1:3; cf. 2 Tim. 1:9; 2 Pet. 5:10): "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature ..." (1 Pet. 1:4). What is "Whereby" here referring to? It speaks of "the knowledge of him," God's word, by which we received the "exceeding great and precious promises" (1 Pet. 1:4). It is through the Bible that we obtain faith, grace and peace with God (Rom. 5:1-2; Eph 2:8). It is through the Bible that "... are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these [Biblical calls to salvation] ye might be partakers of the divine nature [by being born again] ..." (1 Pet. 1:4).

1 Peter 1:22-23: "Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever."

WILL KINNEY:

1 Corinthians 12:9 "For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom ... to another faith by the same Spirit."

Galatians 5:22 one of the parts of the fruit of the Spirit is faith. The Spirit produces faith, though the new versions have changed this to 'faithfulness'.

1 Corinthians 3:5-6 "Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase." You can preach and teach gospel truths, but unless God Himself gives the increase and causes the seed to sprout and grow, there is no belief and no life. (The NASB & NIV have both changed the meaning of this section, added words not in any text, and don't even agree with each other.)

2 Corinthians 10:15 "when your faith is increased". This is a passive verb. Someone else increases our faith. It is the Lord, as even the apostles recognized when they said to Him in Luke 17:5 "Lord, increase our faith."

One of the many serious changes being made in the modern bible versions is how they are altering the phrase "the faith OF Christ". Many times the phrase "by the faith OF Jesus Christ" has been changed to "by faith IN Jesus Christ". See for example Romans 3:22; Galatians 2:16, 20; 3:22; Ephesians 3:12; Phillipians 3:9; James 2:1; Revelation 2:13; and 14:12.

JOHN HENRY:

Galatians 2:16: "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be JUSTIFIED BY THE FAITH OF CHRIST, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified."

Galatians 2:20: "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I LIVE BY THE FAITH OF THE SON OF GOD, who loved me, and gave himself for me."

Galatians 3:22: "But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that THE PROMISE BY FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST might be given TO THEM THAT BELIEVE."

Ephesians 3:12: "In whom WE HAVE boldness and ACCESS with confidence BY THE FAITH OF HIM."

Philippians 3:9: "And be found in him, not having mine own RIGHTEOUSNESS, which is of the law, but that WHICH IS THROUGH THE FAITH OF CHRIST, the righteousness which is of God BY FAITH:"

James 2:1: "My brethren, have not THE FAITH OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons."

Revelation 2:13: "I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied MY FAITH, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth."

Revelation 14:12: "Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that KEEP the commandments of God, and THE FAITH OF JESUS."

What is "The Faith of God" (Romans 3:3), "The Faith of Christ" (Galatians 2:16; Philippians 3:9), "The Faith of the Son of God" (Galatians 2:20), "The Faith of our Lord Jesus Christ" (James 2:1), "The Faith of Jesus" (Revelation 14:12), "The Faith of Him" (Ephesians 3:12), "My Faith" (Revelation 2:13)? It is none other than the New Testament, the "One Faith" (Ephesians 4:5), "the Faith of the Gospel" (Philippians 1:27), "... the Faith which was once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3), "the Faith of God's elect" (Titus 1:1), "the Faith of the saints (Revelation 13:10)!!! Virtually every other time of the 30 additional times the phrase, "the faith" is found in the New Testament it means the New Testament.

WILL KINNEY: ROMANS 3:22; GALATIANS 2:16

Romans 3:22 "Even the righteousness of God which is by faith OF Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference."

Galatians 2:16 "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith OF Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith OF Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified."

Here the NKJV, NIV and NASB have all changed this to "faith IN Jesus Christ", thus changing the truth that this faith comes from Jesus Christ and instead implying that it comes from ourselves.

This is not a question of Greek texts differing, because they all say the same thing, dia pisteos iesou xristou, the genitive of possession or source. We speak of the birth of Christ, the death of Christ, the resurrection of Jesus, the body of Jesus, the cross of Christ, the riches of Christ, the kingdom of Christ, the glory of Christ, and many other things using the same grammatical construction, but suddenly the NKJV, NAS, NIV, and most modern bibles now have "through faith IN Jesus Christ."

The older Bibles - Wycliffe 1395, Tyndale 1525, Coverdale 1535, the Great Bible 1540, Matthew's Bible 1549, the Bishop's Bible 1568, the Geneva 1599, even Wesley's 1755 translation, Darby, Young's, Webster's 1833 translation all read as the King James Bible, and so do the Third Millenium Bible and the KJV 21.

The Italian Diodati of Galatians 2:16 - is the same as the King James Bible, reading: "ma per la fede di Gesu Cristo"

The Spanish Reina Valera from 1602 to 1995 all read just like the King James Bible with: "sino por la fe de Jesucristo"

However the ASV of 1901 changed about half of these references to "the faith OF Jesus Christ" to faith IN Jesus Christ, and from then on all the references have been changed in the NKJV, RSV, NASB and NIV.

JOHN HENRY

Galatians 3:22: "But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that THE PROMISE BY FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST MIGHT BE GIVEN TO THEM THAT BELIEVE."

Romans 3:22: "Even the righteousness of God which is BY FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST UNTO ALL AND UPON ALL THEM THAT BELIEVE: for there is no difference."

Note too that the preposition "OF" not only means "originating from" and "caused by" but it also means "adhering to," "centering on" and "directed toward." It means both in Galatians 3:22 and Romans 3:22 above. Just as "the scripture hath concluded all under sin" (Galatians 3:22), likewise this "faith of Jesus Christ" is clearly "unto all," but is only "upon all them that believe: for there is no difference" (Romans 3:22).

WILL KINNEY

Some then argue that faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17 It is true that God uses His word as the means to awaken the faith which He Himself gives to His elect. The question to ask is, Who gives us ears to "hear" the word of God? God does, of course. He opens the understanding of some and closes the eyes and ears of others.

"What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day." Romans 11:7-8.

"Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day." Deuteronomy 29:4

"Then opened He their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures." Luke 24:45.

JOHN HENRY:

We saw in Part Eight that "the Faith of God" (Romans 3:3), "the Faith of Christ" (Galatians 2:16; Philippians 3:9), "the Faith of the Son of God" (Galatians 2:20) is none other than "the Faith which was once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3). So, absolutely, our "faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17).

We have already dealt with John 12:37-41 in Part Three. Romans 11:7-8 is the same situation as spoken of in John 12:37-41 (Matthew 13:10-15; Mark 4:10-20; Acts 28:23-28; Romans 11:11-12, 25). All these passages are referring to the prophecy of Isaiah 6:9-13 which speaks of national Israel, not of individuals.

Isaiah 6:9-10: "And he said, Go, and tell THIS PEOPLE, Hear YE indeed, but understand not; and see YE indeed, but perceive not. 10 Make the heart of THIS PEOPLE fat, and make THEIR ears heavy, and shut THEIR eyes; lest THEY see with THEIR eyes, and hear with THEIR ears, and understand with THEIR heart, and convert, and be healed.

The same holds true for Deuteronomy 29:4.

2 Corinthians 3:14-16: "But their [Israel's] minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is DONE AWAY IN CHRIST. 15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, THE VAIL IS UPON THEIR HEART. 16 Nevertheless WHEN IT SHALL TURN TO THE LORD, THE VAIL SHALL BE TAKEN AWAY."

This is not only true of Israel, the microcosm of Humanity, but of every nation and race of people. Contrary to the teaching of C. H. Spurgeon, that there will be more in Heaven than in Hell, the Lord Jesus said :

Matthew 7:13-14: "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and MANY THERE BE WHICH GO IN THEREAT: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and FEW THERE BE THAT FIND IT."

Concerning Luke 24:45 the Lord Jesus opened the understanding of His already saved apostles, as He does to all of us.

WILL KINNEY:

"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith" - Hebrews 12:2. He is its source, its fountain, the giver, and the perfector of our faith. Every good and perfect gift is from above, and faith is a gift from God. "A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven." John 3:27.

JOHN HENRY:

What Kinney says here is absolutely true, but it is irrelevant to his TULIP heresy.

WILL KINNEY: 2 THESSALONIANS 2:10-14

2 Thessalonians 2:10-14 shows a great contrast between two groups of people. Verses 10-12 describe those who "received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousnes."

Then verses 13-14 describe the other group in stark contrast. "But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ."

This "whereunto" refers back to the whole process of salvation. We were chosen from the beginning, set aside by the Spirit and called to believe the truth.

If you believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again, then believe also what the Holy Bible says about Who gave you this saving faith to believe these things and let us give Him all the glory.

JOHN HENRY:

The setting of 2 Thessalonians 2:10-14 is in the Great Tribulation (2 Thessalonians 2:8-9), but the principal of receiving or not receiving Jesus Christ, the Truth, through God's word, the truth, is the same in every dispensation of time.

2 Thessalonians 2:10-12: "And [Satan] with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they RECEIVED NOT THE LOVE OF THE TRUTH, that they might be SAVED. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who BELIEVED NOT THE TRUTH, but had PLEASURE IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS. 13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because GOD HATH FROM THE BEGINNING CHOSEN YOU TO SALVATION through sanctification of the Spirit and BELIEF OF THE TRUTH: 14 Whereunto HE CALLED YOU BY OUR GOSPEL, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ."

The first group "received not the love of the truth" (v.10) and "believed not the truth" and were thus "damned" (v. 12); but the second group received "salvation" through "belief of the truth" (v. 13)

John 12:48: "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day."

John 3:33-36: "HE THAT HATH RECEIVED HIS TESTIMONY HATH SET TO HIS SEAL THAT GOD IS TRUE. 34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh THE WORDS OF GOD: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. 35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. 36 HE THAT BELIEVETH ON THE SON HATH EVERLASTING LIFE: and HE THAT BELIEVETH NOT THE SON shall not see life; but THE WRATH OF GOD ABIDETH ON HIM."

John 3:16-21: "For God so loved the world, that HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH, but have everlasting life. 17 For GOD SENT NOT HIS SON into the world to condemn the world; but THAT THE WORLD THROUGH HIM MIGHT BE SAVED. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but HE THAT BELIEVETH NOT IS CONDEMNED ALREADY, BECAUSE HE HATH NOT BELIEVED IN THE NAME OF THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and MEN LOVED DARKNESS RATHER THAN LIGHT, BECAUSE THEIR DEEDS WERE EVIL. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But HE THAT DOETH TRUTH COMETH TO THE LIGHT, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God."

Note too the similarity of the language in 2 Thessalonians 2:13 and 1 Peter 1:2 which is found only in these two verses:

2 Thessalonians 2:13: "... God hath from the beginning CHOSEN you to salvation THROUGH SANCTIFICATION OF THE SPIRIT and belief of the truth."

1 Peter 1:2: "ELECT according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, THROUGH SANCTIFICATION OF THE SPIRIT, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ ..."

Chosen and elect are synonymous. Elect according to the foreknowledge when?

Ephesians 1:4-5, 13: "According as he hath CHOSEN us in him BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: 5 Having PREDESTINATED us unto THE ADOPTION of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will .... IN WHOM YE ALSO TRUSTED, AFTER THAT YE HEARD THE WORD OF TRUTH, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit ..."

Romans 8:23, 29-30: "And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for THE ADOPTION, to wit, the redemption of our body. ...

People are "born again" (1 Peter 1:23) because they "have purified [their] souls in OBEYING THE TRUTH through the Spirit" (1 Peter 1:22). "Obeying the truth" is just another way of saying, believe the truth.

The Lord Jesus said, "... Except a man be born of water [God's word] and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." (John 3:5, cf. 17:17; Titus 3:5; Ephesians 5:26)

WILL KINNEY: ACTS 5:31, 11:18; 2 TIMOTHY 2:24-25; JEREMIAH 31:18-19; 1 KINGS 18:37

Repentance is also a gift of God

Just as God Himself gives us the faith to believe the gospel, so too He gives Repentance. In Acts 5:31 the apostle Peter says in his preaching: "Him (Christ) hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, FOR TO GIVE REPENTANCE to Israel, and forgiveness of sins."

Again, in Acts 11:18 when Peter is before the brethren in Jerusalem telling them how God had sent him to preach to the Gentiles the gospel of the grace of God and how God had given them the Holy Ghost just as He had to the Jewish believers, we read: "When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles GRANTED REPENTANCE UNTO LIFE."

In 2 Timothy 2:24-25 the apostle Paul writes to Timothy telling him how to deal with those who hold false doctrines.  He tells him: "And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,  In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; IF GOD PERADVENTURE WILL GIVE THEM REPENTANCE to the acknowledging of the truth."

The same truth is taught in the Old Testament.  In the book of Jeremiah we read: "Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke; TURN THOU ME, AND I SHALL BE TURNED; for thou art the LORD my God. Surely AFTER I WAS TURNED, I REPENTED."  Jeremiah 31:18-19.

It is recorded in 1 Kings when the prophet Elijah was contending with the false prophets of Baal and telling the people of Israel - "How long halt ye between two opinions? If the LORD be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him."  In his prayer to the Lord God Elijah then says: Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and THAT THOU HAST TURNED THEIR HEART BACK AGAIN." 1 Kings 18:37

JOHN HENRY:

Of course it is God who gives and grants repentance to men, women, boys and girls!  If He did not no one could be saved!  The Lord Jesus Christ said:

"And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. ... And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.  He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day." (John 12:32, 47-48)

"Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8  And when he is come, HE WILL REPROVE THE WORLD OF SIN, AND OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND OF JUDGMENT: 9  Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10  Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11  Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged." (John 16:7-11)

Two things are required for salvation.  1) The words of God, 2) the convicting power of the Spirit of truth, the Comforter (John 3:3-7; 1 Peter 1:23; Titus 3:5-7).  Again Jesus said:

"But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. ... 30  He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. 31  Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but THE BLASPHEMY AGAINST THE HOLY GHOST SHALL NOT BE FORGIVEN UNTO MEN. 32  And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but WHOSOEVER SPEAKETH AGAINST THE HOLY GHOST, IT SHALL NOT BE FORGIVEN HIM, NEITHER IN THIS WORLD, NEITHER IN THE WORLD TO COME." (Matthew 12:28, 30-32)

Rejecting the testimony of the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of truth, which He testifies concerning the Lord Jesus Christ is the ONLY unforgivable sin a man can commit.  It is making Him a liar!

1 John 5:6-12:  "... And IT IS THE SPIRIT THAT BEARETH WITNESS, because the Spirit is truth.  7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.  8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, THE SPIRIT, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.  9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. 10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself:  HE THAT BELIEVETH NOT GOD HATH MADE HIM A LIAR; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.  11 And THIS IS THE RECORD, THAT GOD HATH GIVEN TO US ETERNAL LIFE, AND THIS LIFE IS IN HIS SON.  12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life."

Yes, God gives repentance and faith, but it is man's responsibility to receive them, and as we have already proven, it is man's right before the most High to reject the gifts of repentance and faith that God freely extents to ALL men.

Lamentations 3:35-36:  "To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High, to subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not."

John 5:39-40:  "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And YE WILL NOT come to me, that ye might have life." (cf. Matthew 23:37)

Proverbs 29:1:  "He, that being often reproved HARDENETH HIS NECK, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy."

Acts 7:51: "Ye stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always RESIST the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye."

Proverbs 1:24-27: "Because I have called, and YE REFUSED; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25  But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: 26  I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27  When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you." (cf. Matthew 18:2-3; Mark 10:15; Luke 18:17; Psalms 131:1-2; 1 Peter 1:14)

Revelation 20:11-15:  "And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12  And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and THE BOOKS WERE OPENED: AND ANOTHER BOOK WAS OPENED, WHICH IS THE BOOK OF LIFE: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15  AND WHOSOEVER WAS NOT FOUND WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF LIFE WAS CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE." (cf. Revelation 13:8, 17:6; Psalm 69:23-28)

WILL KINNEY: HEBREWS 12:1-3; PSALM 22:7-9

Objections Raised:

A Bible corrector, who thinks he can "correct" any and all bible versions out there according to his own understanding, wrote to me on a public forum saying: "It's NOT the faith "of" Christ...Christ has no faith, He has SURE KNOWLEDGE! Biblical faith is the SUBSTANCE of things hoped for, the EVIDENCE of things not seen. What is not seen by CHRIST? What things require EVIDENCE for Him to know? Does he guess at or hope for ANYTHING? WHAT DOES CHRIST NOT KNOW?"

To whom I answered: For those who have ears to hear, let's take a closer look at what the Bible says regarding the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus. The Book of Hebrews presents us with the Person of Jesus as our pattern to follow. (and much more of course too).

However in Hebrews 12:1-3 we read: "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus THE AUTHOR AND FINISHER OF OUR FAITH; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds."

We are to look to the human side of Jesus as he walked here on earth before He accomplished our redemption on the cross, and finally ascended up into heaven where He now sits at the Father's right hand.

Did Jesus have faith while on earth in his human body? Did He trust God and hope in His word when he underwent trials and persecution? Absolutely.

Psalm 22 is all about the Lord Jesus and there we read in verses 7-9 "All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He TRUSTED ON the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. But thou are he that took me out of the womb: THOU DIDST MAKE ME HOPE when I was upon my mother's breasts." (The verse is again referenced in Matthew 27:43)

JOHN HENRY:

Yes, we are to follow the Lord Jesus' example, and trust in the Lord.

Proverbs 3:5-7:  "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. 7  Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil."

Of course Christ trusted in the Father during His earthly sojourn, but He did it with 100% assurance and free from doubt.  He had been with the Lord in heaven, neither did He have the sin nature as we do.  However, we do "have faith as a grain of mustard seed" at best as compared to Him, but it is enough.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ... And the Word was made flesh ..." (John 1:1, 14)  "Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do THY WILL, O God. ... He said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by THE LAW;  Then said he, Lo, I COME TO DO THY WILL, O GOD. He taketh away THE FIRST, that he may establish THE SECOND. By the which WILL we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once FOR ALL." (Hebrew 10:7-10)  "Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." (Philippians 2:6-8)  "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit." (1 Peter 3:18)

This too is talking about "Jesus the Author and Finisher of our Faith."  And again, what is the Faith?

As previously proved in Part Eight, "The Faith of God" (Romans 3:3), "The Faith of Christ" (Galatians 2:16; Philippians 3:9), "The Faith of the Son of God" (Galatians 2:20), "The Faith of our Lord Jesus Christ" (James 2:1), "The Faith of Jesus" (Revelation 14:12) is none other than the New Testament, the "One Faith" (Ephesians 4:5), "the Faith of the Gospel" (Philippians 1:27), "... the Faith which was once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3), "the Faith of God's elect" (Titus 1:1), "the Faith of the saints (Revelation 13:10). "Our Faith" is the completed Bible!  It means God's word.  It is God's word applied by the Holy Spirit that regenerates our dead spirits and gives us life and victory.

1 John 5:4-6: "For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even OUR FAITH. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?  6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth."

Note that above in 1 John 5:6 "water" is symbolic for the Bible (John 3:5, 13:4-11; 17:17; Isaiah 55:10-11; Ephesians 5:26; Titus 3:5; 1 John 5:8).  It was prophesied in the Bible (water) that Christ would come physically with flesh and blood to die for our sins (Isaiah 7:14; Micah 5:2; Psalm 22; Isaiah 53; Daniel 9:24-26; cf. 1 John 4:1-3).

The faith of Jesus Christ is the New Testament of which He is Mediator and which is not of the letter, but of the spirit written in our hearts (Hebrews 9:15; 2 Corinthians 3:6).   It is this Book that reminds all who believe in Christ of His broken body and shed blood.  It is this Book that commands believers to take the Gospel message to people and preach it to every creature, and to send it to the uttermost part of the earth.

WILL KINNEY: ROMANS 3:22

When Scripture later on talks about "the righteousness of God which is by faith OF Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe" (Romans 3:22) it is teaching that this saving faith comes not from the fallen and spiritually dead natural man, but rather the source and fount of this faith is Jesus Christ Himself.

JOHN HENRY:

It is not as taught in Calvinism, that the fallen and spiritually dead natural man is incapable of believing and receiving the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  In the unscriptural heresy of Calvinism this is called Total Depravity, but in reality it is taught as Total Inability.  They teach that a man is incapable of believing the Gospel, and that God has chosen some for salvation and the rest for Hell.

It is true that man in not able to save himself, and that he is "desperately wicked" (Jeremiah 17:9), but the Bible also clearly teaches that God died for all men, not just some, although as we have seen individuals must receive the gift of salvation that God offers.  Furthermore, if an individual will hear, and receive God's word that one will be saved.

God created man in His image as a trinity with body, spirit and soul (Genesis 1:26-27, 2:7; cf. 1 Thessalonians 5:23).  The King James Bible also translates the Hebrew word for "soul" as heart, will, mind, desire, appetite, etc.  The ability to will, and to repent and believe God or not are within a man.  The "soul," not the "spirit" is the seat of our mind, will, and ability to reason.  Yes, God did give us a will, the ability to choose or reject His free pardon for sin and for salvation.  This is demonstrated by the fact that Adam and Eve chose to disobey God.  Adam and Eve's spirits, not their bodies nor their souls, died the very day that they chose to disobey God's single negative commandment to them (Genesis 2:16-17, 3:1-6).  This is the reason people must be born again.  People have dead spirits, that is, only "the residue of the spirit" (Malachi 2:15), that must be regenerated with in us.  The Bible teaches that the ability to receive God's salvation is in man's "heart" (soul) from which he believes.

Romans 10:8-10:  "... The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and IN THY HEART: that is, THE WORD OF FAITH, which we preach; 9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt BELIEVE IN THINE HEART that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10  For WITH THE HEART MAN BELIEVETH unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

John 3:6-7:  "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be BORN AGAIN."

Ephesians 2:10:  "For we are his workmanship, CREATED [born again] IN CHRIST JESUS unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."

Colossians 2:11, 13:  "In whom also ye are circumcised with THE CIRCUMCISION MADE WITHOUT HANDS [regeneration of the dead spirit], in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: ... And you, being DEAD IN YOUR SINS and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses." (cf. Deuteronomy 10:16, 30:6; Jeremiah 4:4; Romans 2:29; Philippians 3:3)

WILL KINNEY:

When Scripture later on talks about "the righteousness of God which is by faith OF Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe" (Romans 3:22) it is teaching that this saving faith comes not from the fallen and spiritually dead natural man, but rather the source and fount of this faith is Jesus Christ Himself.

The construction of the language here in Romans 3:22 where it speaks of "the righteousness OF God" is the same when it speaks of "the faith OF Jesus Christ". Both the righteousness and the faith come from the godhead, not man.

JOHN HENRY:

Of course "the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ" is not from man, but from God.  Furthermore, it is also "unto ALL and upon ALL them that believe" (Romans 3:22).  This salvation message is "UNTO ALL," but is only "UPON ALL" that believe.  It is to everyone, but it only saves them that believe it.

Romans 1:16-17:  "For I am not ashamed of THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST: for it is the power of God unto salvation TO EVERY ONE THAT BELIEVETH; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.  For therein [the Gospel] is the righteousness of God REVEALED FROM FAITH [God's word] TO FAITH [our belief of it]: as it is written, The just shall live by faith."

So we see that Romans 3:22 (and the whole tenor of Scripture) teaches that saving faith comes from God by way of His word which is applied to man's heart by the convicting power of the Holy Spirit.  All those who believe the Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ are saved; those who do not believe the Gospel involve themselves in an aggravated and compounded condemnation, because they reject the testimony of the Holy Spirit (1 John 5:10).

God's 100% Righteous, Just, Impartial, Equitable, Judgments without Respect of Persons:

Christ's salvation is according to the truth of the word of God.  The Lord's salvation does not violate His own word, as the Calvinist force it to do, but is rather based upon it.  The good God of the Bible has a just, equal and fair way for salvation and it is not for a select few, but it is extended to ALL.

Proverbs 24:23:  "... It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment."

Psalms 25:8:  "Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way."

Psalms 34:8:  "O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him."

Psalms 69:16:  "Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies."

Psalms 86:5:  "For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee."

Psalms 106:1:  "Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever."

Lamentations 3:25:  "The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him."

Acts 10:34-35:  "... Of a truth I perceive that GOD IS NO RESPECTER OF PERSONS: But in every nation HE THAT FEARETH HIM, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with Him."

Job 28:28: "... Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Psalms 115:13:  "He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great."

Psalms 111:10:  "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom ..."

Proverbs 8:13:  "The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate."

Proverbs 9:10:  "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding."

Proverbs 14:26-27:  "In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.  The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death."

Proverbs 16:6:  "By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil."

Psalms 128:1:  "Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways."

WILL KINNEY: JAMES 1:17; MATTHEW 11:15

Saving faith is a gift from God to His elect sheep and children. Jesus Himself is the Author and Finisher of this faith that God gives to His people. That is why the King James Bible and several others are theologically correct when they call this "the faith OF the Son of God" - He is the source and originator (author) of this faith. "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above." James 1:17

JOHN HENRY:

Romans 6:23:  "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Romans 5:12-21:  "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so DEATH PASSED UPON ALL MEN, for that all have sinned: 13  (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14  Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 15  But not as the offence, so also is THE FREE GIFT. For if through the offence of one many be dead, MUCH MORE THE GRACE OF GOD, AND THE GIFT BY GRACE, WHICH IS BY ONE MAN, JESUS CHRIST, HATH ABOUNDED UNTO MANY. 16  And not as it was by one that sinned, so is THE GIFT: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but THE FREE GIFT is of many offences unto justification. 17  For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; MUCH MORE they which receive abundance of grace and of THE GIFT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 18  Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so BY THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF ONE THE FREE GIFT CAME UPON ALL MEN UNTO JUSTIFICATION OF LIFE. 19  For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 20  Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21  That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord."

Ephesians 2:8:  "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

James 1:17-18, 21:  "Every good gift and every PERFECT GIFT is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18 Of his own will BEGAT HE US WITH THE WORD OF TRUTH, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. ... Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and RECEIVE WITH MEEKNESS THE ENGRAFTED WORD, which is able to save your souls."

Saving faith is a free gift from God extended to all people.  It is not as Kinney teaches that God selects some to go to hell, and some for heaven.  No, God is good and is no respecter of persons. God is all knowing and knows every man, woman, boy and girl who will receive Him, and everyone who will not, and has elected or chosen the saved according to this foreknowledge. Those that God knew would never ever receive His free gift of salvation were blotted out of "the Lambs book of life" before the foundation of the World (Revelation 3:5, 13:8, 17:8, 20:12, 15, 21:27, 22:19; Psalm 69:24-28; Exodus 32:33).

Christ's salvation is according to the truth of the word of God.  The Lord's salvation does not violate His own word, as the Calvinist force it to do, but is rather based upon it.  The good God of the Bible has a just, equal and fair way for salvation and it is not for a select few, but it is extended to ALL.

Nahum 1:7:  "The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and HE KNOWETH THEM THAT TRUST IN HIM."

2 Timothy 2:19:  "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, THE LORD KNOWETH THEM THAT ARE HIS. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity."

Psalms 37:18, 28:  "The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever. ... For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off."

John 10:14:  "I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine."

1 Peter 1:2:  "Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ ..." (2 Thessalonians 2:13-14)

Revelation 3:5:  "He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels." (cf. 1 John 5:4-5)

If there is any possible way that a person will receive salvation on the terms that God has laid out He will work it so that that one will receive Him.

Job 33:14-30:  "For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. 15  In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; 16  Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, 17  That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. 18  He [God] keepeth back his soul from the pit [hell], and his life from perishing by the sword. 19  He is chastened [cf. 2 Timothy 2:25] also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain: 20  So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat. 21  His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out. 22  Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers. 23  If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter [a soul winner], one among a thousand, to shew unto man his [Christ's] uprightness:   24  Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom [cf. Mark 10:45]. 25  His flesh shall be fresher than a childs: he shall return to the days of his youth: 26  He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his [Christ's] righteousness. 27  He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right  [repentance], and it profited me not; 28  He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light. 29  Lo, ALL THESE THINGS WORKETH GOD OFTENTIMES WITH MAN, 30  TO BRING BACK HIS SOUL FROM THE PIT, TO BE ENLIGHTENED WITH THE LIGHT OF THE LIVING [cf. Psalms 27:1; John 8:12]." (cf. )

God's method of salvation is this:  When one under the conviction of the Holy Spirit as He applies the word of God, the Bible, to his heart, if that one will repent of his sins and receive the Truth that Jesus Christ died for his sins then God will receive that one and instantly cause him to be born again into the family of God.  At the beginning of the Lord Jesus' ministry he said:  "... The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: REPENT ye, and BELIEVE the gospel." (Acts 20:21; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4)

Romans 6:16, 23:  "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? ... For the WAGES of sin is DEATH; but the GIFT OF GOD IS ETERNAL LIFE THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD."

Jesus & Two Thieves on Crosses Together:

Luke 23:39-43:  "And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40  But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God [HE RECOGNIZED JESUS WAS GOD], seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 41  And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds [REPENTANCE OF SINS]: but this man hath done nothing amiss [RECOGNIZED JESUS IS SINLESS]. 42  And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom [FAITH IN CHRIST'S ABILITY TO SAVE]. 43  And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise [SALVATION RECEIVED]."

Man's part in salvation is to receive it through repentance and faith (2 Corinthians 7:10; James 1:21; John 1:12-13; Ephesians 2:8-9; cf. John 6:28-29).  Then the Holy Spirit will regenerate our dead spirit (Titus 3:5-7; John 3:5-7; 1 Peter 3:23).

WILL KINNEY:

"He that hath ears to hear, let him hear." Matthew 11:15

JOHN HENRY:

Kinney's connotation here is that if you are one of elect you will hear God's call to Glory.  The opposite side of that coin is that it was God's perfect will to damn the unhearing to Hell.

Verses like Matthew 11:15 are found in the New Testament a total of 16 time (8 + 8).  Note that 8 is the number of new beginnings ().  The are repeated reminders for everyone to listen up.  As contrasted with National Israel (Isaiah 6:9-10) have been blinded,  these are calls to individuals to receive Christ Jesus as Saviour and Lord (Matthew 11:15, 13:9, 13:43; Mark 4:9,  4:23, 7:16; Luke 8:8, 14:3; Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29, 3:6, 13, 22, 13:9).

If you're not saved, receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour now!

CONCLUSION

Not even John Calvin himself believed in Limited Atonement. Let it be very plainly stated that Calvin himself here repudiates "LIMITED ATONEMENT" and affirms an "UNLIMITED ATONEMENT"! And everyone of his "followers" should do likewise! No amount of semantical gymnastics can twist the clear meaning of Calvin's words quoted below into anything else but that!

Calvin wrote in his Commentary on 1 John 2:2:

"CHRIST SUFFERED FOR THE SINS OF THE WHOLE WORLD. and in the goodness of God is OFFERED UNTO ALL MEN WITHOUT DISTINCTION, HIS BLOOD BEING SHED NOT FOR A PART OF THE WORLD ONLY, BUT FOR THE WHOLE HUMAN RACE; for although in the world nothing is found worthy of the favor of God, yet he HOLDS OUT THE PROPITIATION TO THE WHOLE WORLD, since without exception he SUMMONS ALL TO THE FAITH OF CHRIST, which is nothing else than the door unto hope." (Strong, Augustus H., Systematic Theology, Vol. II, Doctrine of Salvation, p. 778 as quoted by John R. Rice in his book, Predestined For Hell? No!, p. 12, 1958 & 1977)

Calvin wrote in his Commentary on Mark 14:24:

"The word many DOES NOT MEAN A PART OF THE WORLD ONLY, BUT THE WHOLE HUMAN RACE: he contrasts many with one as if to say that he would not be the Redeemer of one man, but would meet death to deliver many of their cursed guilt. No doubt that in speaking to a few Christ wished to make His teaching available to a larger number...So when we come to the holy table not only should the general idea come to our mind that THE WORLD IS REDEEMED BY THE BLOOD OF CHRIST but also each should reckon to himself that his own sins are covered." (Harmony of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, Volume III, p. 139, Eerdmans, Grand Rapids, 1972)

Calvin witnesses for "Unlimited Atonement" in his Commentary on Romans 5:18:

"Paul makes grace COMMON TO ALL MEN, not because it in fact EXTENDS TO ALL, but because IT IS OFFERED TO ALL. Although CHRIST SUFFERED FOR THE SINS OF THE WORLD. AND IS OFFERED BY THE GOODNESS OF GOD WITHOUT DISTINCTION TO ALL MEN, yet not all receive him." (Commentary on Romans and Thessalonians, pp. 117-18, Eerdmans in Grand Rapids, 1973)

John Calvin's last testimony as to "Unlimited Atonement" is found in His Last Will, And Farewells:

"I testify also and declare, that I suppliantly beg of Him, that He may be pleased so to was and purify me in the blood which my Sovereign Redeemer HAS SHED FOR THE SINS OF THE HUMAN RACE, that under His shadow I may be able to stand at the judgment-seat. ..." (Schaff, Philip, History of the Christian Church, Vol. 8, pp. 828-29, Eerdmans, Grand Rapids, 1972)
